He was visiting on purpose, drawn by a story that was already old: that Euripides, the great Athenian tragedian, had retreated here from the city he found insufferable, to a hillside cave above the Saronic Gulf on the south coast of Salamis, and that here, in the dark, he had written some of the plays that would outlast ancient civilization itself. The cave is 47 meters deep, with ten small chambers. It faces the sea.
