But for most of a century, the stretch of beach between Eastbourne and Pevensey Bay was called locally the Crumbles - a low, exposed bank of pebbles where two young women died, four years apart, in crimes that had nothing to do with each other beyond the place itself. Irene Munro was seventeen. Emily Kaye was thirty-eight. Both came down to the Sussex coast looking for something - a holiday, in Irene's case; a new life with a man, in Emily's. Neither went home. This story tries to tell theirs.
