The wood dissolved in the salt water long ago, along with the rope, the cloth, the bodies of anyone who may have gone down with her. What the Aegean preserved instead were the things that cannot dissolve: clay. Hundreds of ceramic vessels, pots and jars from an Early Bronze Age workshop in the Argolid, resting on the seabed off the small islet of Dokos just as they settled when the cargo shifted and the ship went under around 2200 BC. That scatter of clay is the oldest known underwater shipwreck ever discovered — not the remains of a ship, exactly, but the ghost of one.
