In February 2006, at the military airfield the Soviets had called Poltava-4, the final Tu-22M3 bomber in Ukrainian hands was methodically dismantled under the terms of a disarmament agreement with the United States. It was the end of an era for a base that had hosted a heavy bomber division, eighteen Tu-22M3s and six Tu-16s, until 2004. But not every aircraft went to the scrapyard. A handful of veterans, the pilots who had flown these machines, decided some should be saved. From that impulse grew an open-air museum where the hardware of the Cold War now stands still on the tarmac, engines cold, mission over.
