In 2007, nine people lived here. By 2013, there was no one at all through the winter - just shuttered houses on a bluff above the Dnieper, a place with no power lines, no running water, and no reason to stay once the summer visitors drove away. Yet this quiet ribbon of land north of Kaniv was once a city, and not just any city. Trakhtemyriv was the chosen home of the Registered Cossacks, the fortified heart of a military order that helped shape the destiny of Ukraine. Part of that old city is gone now, swallowed by the Kaniv Reservoir when the river was dammed. What remains stands empty most of the year, watching the water where a capital used to be.
